Can piglets be weaned from the sow without using a prestarter?
From time to time this issue is raised in pig forums and chats. The desire to save often drives entrepreneurs into various experiments, the results of which they do not always tell.
The answer to this question is Yes, it is possible to take time off without using a prestarter!
But one must understand under what circumstances it can be done. As everyone knows, physiologically pigs can absorb proteins and carbohydrates of cereals only from the 21st day of birth in small quantities, before which they are able to absorb only dairy products, as well as simple fats and proteins of animal origin. Fully digestive food of the gastrointestinal tract of pigs can be digested and digested only after 8 weeks from birth.
The activity of enzymes at different ages.
Some people say that in the wild, pigs collect grass and roots and survive, so domestic pigs can grow without special feeds. Yes, in the recent past, it was. Until 2000, pigs were fed mainly cereals at Ukrainian enterprises, they were ground wheat, barley, corn, and sometimes only one crop. The piglets were fed fried barley during the feeding period, and after weaning they were fed with crushed grain (dert). And now let's remember the most important thing - pigs were weaned from a sow at the age of 60 days, with them already more than 8 weeks and the digestive system was already formed.
Here is the answer to the question - so the piglets can be weaned from the sow without the use of specialized feed provided that it will be after 8 weeks of age. Some farms switched to 45 days weaning in the 1990s, but the results were worse than 60 because pigs were not yet ready and often encountered diarrhea, swelling and more.
At the moment, pig farming is a business and pig farmers cannot afford to leave an additional sow for 32 days on the slopes, because then few will even receive 2 farrowing sows a year. Currently, there are farms that do super-early weaning at 7 and 14 days, but this requires special products and equipment. As a standard, farms in Europe are weaned in 21 or 28 days using the necessary starters.
