Genetic implications of pigs and conditions for their implementation

It is good practice for practitioners to know the technological features, advantages and disadvantages of the genotypes of pigs selected for breeding, the main features that determine the productivity and methods and ways of their disclosure. Intensive selection, especially for carcass meat, is sometimes accompanied by certain defects of pigs: hormonal and vegetative - nervous disorders, high sensitivity of the cardiovascular system, limited thermoregulation and nervous stimuli. Such manifestations were called stress syndrome of pigs, or a syndrome of poor adaptation.

It turned out that pigs of different breeds otherwise react to stressful situations. At the beginning of observations in the 60s of the last century, most breeding animals of pig breeds of 70-90% were genetic carriers of stress sensitivity. The organism of such animals is constitutionally gentle, and they poorly adapt to the harsh conditions of intensive technology, their productivity is reduced, the organoleptic and technological properties of meat are significantly worse than those of stress-insensitive pigs.

Since then, breeding swine has been monitored in various ways by their genetically determined stresses. Today, if they believe the brochures of breeding firms, their breeding animals are stress-resistant, but meat processors indicate that many, sometimes up to 50%, carcasses of slaughtered pigs have signs of stress-sensitivity. That is, genetically stable animals in conditions of tangible technological large group maintenance for industrial production or transportation to the slaughter significantly stressed.
